Thai cuisine is one of the most famous and exciting cuisines in the world today. It is based on lightly prepared dishes, enhanced with strong aromatic ingredients, but it also needs to find a balance between the four elements of taste: sweet, sour, salty and bitter. Through the years, Thai cuisine can be described as a blend of four regional cuisines, and its history could be relate with the Cosmopolitan palace cuisine. There are two main ingredients usually relate with its borders which have been its major influence through the years. For example, the southern cuisine uses coconut milk and the northeastern cuisine uses lime juice. Many of their dishes are adaptations of Chinese, Indian or Persian cuisine. A typical meal in Thailand is usually a simple dish or rice with many side dishes. At the beginning food was eaten with the right hand, no utensils, but people use fork and spoon nowadays. There was a specific event that helped the Thai cuisine get known around the world; the Vietnam War period. In 1960s, Thailand became a touristic place because American troops stopped there to eat and rest during the war. Since that date, Thai cuisine has been getting to be known around the world, and it was recognized as one of the 50 best cuisines in 2011.
